One last glance

A little treat before the end of this wonderful week: Another small part of the fiction.

She was wondering if she would ever see him again. She felt sick every time she thought about it. She hoped...but was frightened the very same moment. She did not know...and simply could not know whether or not he even cared for her. He was always very civil and admittedly talked to her quite often but it was no proof at all. She knew him well enough. He was by all means a nice and well-mannered person. He was friendly to anyone. He always talked to people in a polite way and she was surely not the only one receiving his warm and lovely smile. To be perfectly honest, she never felt treated differently comparing to others.

With trembling fingers she closed her suitcase. Everything was packed up properly. Nothing left. She looked around the small room which has been her home for over a year now. And tomorrow it would all be over. She would be home again. It felt like leaving behind a whole different life. How could one proceed a common, dull life after an adventure like this? She threw her jacket over her arm, the handbag over her shoulder and took the suitcase. Time was near. Every step felt heavy. It seemed to be ages until she reached the door. She could hardly handle holding back the tears. One last look back before she pulled the door shut. Slowly she went down the hallway. Could it really be over? Could all simply end here?

When she reached the hall the other Maidens were already waiting for her. All of them looked pale and sad. Some members of the cast and crew who happened to fly back home one or two days later, had come around to say goodbye. She could see people embracing each other. All of them were desperately trying to continue smiling. It was a sad view. There was nothing positive in it. Such wonderful people, such an outstanding experience they had shared together. They had become friends, almost family. And now? Now it was well and truly over. The spark of hope withered away. There was no coming back.

While she was looking around the scenery her eyes met the one she was desperate to see. He also seemed to be searching the room. Then his eyes met hers. A shiver ran down her spine.

One last word, she wanted to hear from his lips, even if it was 'goodbye'. One last glance into his blue eyes. One last time standing close to him, before she would never be near him again.
